Breaking in Karma

Well, last night (Saturday night) was an absolute blast that lasted well into the wee hours of the morning. I turned in about 4am.  Karma was pretty popular last night. Everyone wanted to come and see the hippy van in the back.   I think the highlight of the night though was the dueling roman candles.  I had been carting around some fireworks for awhile in my car, and before that, at my mother’s apartment.  I bought them at some point to send off when my niece went camping with me. That didn’t happen, so I ended up with these fireworks.  And last night was a first for me. One daring soul would hold up his shield (galvanized garbage can lid) and the other would stand about 50 feet away and shoot lighted roman candles at the guy with the lid. At one point my long-time friend that I had been visiting took her turn being fired upon. She deflected 3 shots and to be honest, it’s pretty cool when they do deflect them.  She also got hit in the upper forearm with a blast. Gave her a slight bruise and scorched her Led Zeppelin  t-shirt. I had heard some stories about this very shirt on the previous night, including one about meeting Robert Plant at the local exhibition while she had a rock memorabilia stall.
The van has been very comfortable to sleep in thus far, and Stormy has settled right in, and no longer roams from window to window all night.  He has taken to his tether quite well, much better than expected.  He will get tangled up from time to time but for the most part, he is either crashed on the bed inside the van, or sprawled outside in the sun.  He does get curious from time to time, and will take his lead right to the end, and then on a couple of occasions, slip right out of his red harness. He also escaped the house a couple of times, but someone has brought him back. He may be adventurous, but he is also a big coward and real naïve. He will let me walk right over and pick him up.
It has been just terrific to catch up with my old buddy. We had been such good friends as children, and managed to keep in touch all these years, we slipped back into conversation as if those 32 years had passed in a few hours.  We revisited old grounds such as our former elementary school on the base, now boarded up. We drove by the old Zellers where we would skateboard from the base through an old road that went through the woods. We went back to the bridges and walked the old Newcastle bridge. My friend has vertigo, so that was interesting…thanks G. for going through it for me! We also drove to Loggieville and through what we believed was the trailer park I used to live in. We drove around looking at funky or elaborate houses, old and new. We tramped through the bush to check out an old estate, picking through the ruins.  We rambled through the large Catholic church in town, beautiful and huge marble columns and such grandeur.  I’m not the religious sort as many of you know, however there is something to be said for church architecture in years past.
Stormy and I haul out tomorrow, after an interview with a local web reporter who had heard about the hippy tour I was taking from my friend and thought it might make an interesting web piece. After that I’ll be packing it up and heading for Quebec. The journey continues…
